Attacks in the Red Sea: the European Union launches its protection mission
Attacks in the Red Sea: the European Union launches its protection mission – (franceinfo)
Since the start of the war in Gaza, Houthi rebels have increased attacks on ships in the Red Sea, with consequences for global maritime commercial traffic. The European Union is launching its own mission to protect navigation in the region.
A new American drone was shot down on Monday February 19 by the Houthi rebels over Yemen. Since November, they have increased attacks on ships passing through the Red Sea, in solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The United States and the United Kingdom set up a multinational maritime protection force in December, but after four months of attacks, the economic consequences are clearly being felt.
12 to 15% of global traffic impacted
According to the European Union, 12 to 15% of global traffic passes through the Suez Canal, but as a preventive measure, many shipowners prefer to bypass Africa. A decision that could impact the price of goods. According to Christopher Dembik, director of macroeconomic research for Saxo Bank, products coming from Asia “could cost a little more due to higher international transport costs”. The US military said it carried out five self-defense strikes against Houthi missiles on Monday. The European Union, for its part, announced its own protection mission in the region.
