the European Union grants 900 million euros in aid to Jordan

The aid will focus in particular on improving the water network in the neighboring country of Israel, which fears a new influx of Palestinian refugees.

A significant amount. The European Union announced on Tuesday November 7 that it would grant aid of more than 900 million euros to Jordan. This statement comes following a meeting between the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, in Brussels (Belgium). The two leaders discussed the Israeli retaliation against Hamas, triggered after the unprecedented deadly attack launched by the terrorist organization on the soil of the Jewish state on October 7.

Jordan, a neighboring country of Israel which already hosts hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, fears a new mass exodus towards its territory. “I reiterated my opposition to any forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and my support for a two-state solution”wrote Ursula von der Leyen on X (formerly Twitter).

Investments in the water network

Discussions also focused on the “need to avoid any negative overflow [du conflit] In the region”, according to a press release. The European aid of 902 million euros will be shared between donations and loans from the European Investment Bank.

The bulk of this financial package will be devoted to improving the kingdom’s water network, education projects and improving energy efficiency. It follows the increase in European aid to the Palestinians, raised to 100 million euros, announced on Monday by the European Commission.
