Europeans have agreed to reduce their gas consumption by 15% this winter, with the exception of Hungary. Gazprom, for its part, announced drastic new cuts.
The gas war is going up another notch. The 27 Member States of the union european have agreed on a 15% reduction in their gas consumption between August 2022 and March 2023. This agreement aims above all to help Germany, which is very dependent on Russian gas, which could bear the brunt of a shutdown deliveries. “Today, we are taking a further step, with a text that will allow us to create this European solidarity which is absolutely essential“, assured Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the Minister of Energy Transition.
This meeting follows the announcement by the Russian gas giant Gazprom, which will halve its deliveries to Europe. The group invokes a technical reason, but the Europeans do not believe this explanation and denounce a political motive. “We send a strong message to Vladimir Putin who once again failed to divide the European Union“, welcomed the Czech Minister of Industry and Trade, Jozef Sikela.
