These new measures are, writes the European Union, a “response to Russia’s escalation in its ongoing illegal war on Ukraine, including the annexation of Ukrainian territory after sham referendums, the mobilization of additional troops and the threat openly brandished nuclear weapons”…
This eighth sanctions package does not include fundamentally new measures: it is essentially an extension and toughening of the previous packages. The list of Russian products banned from being imported into Europe is growing: new steel products, machinery, vehicles, jewelry that is not gold, are added to previous bans… On the contrary, Russia will no longer be able to buy in Europe certain electronic components or aviation parts which can supply its defense industry.
Some measures are also preparing for the Russian oil price cap wanted by the G7. In the list of new personalities sanctioned by the European Union, we find officials from the Ministry of Defense or the Army, members of the electoral commission which oversaw the referendums in Ukraine and musicians, who participated in meetings concerts organized by the power, among which Nikolay Rastorguev, star of Russian song, and favorite singer, of Vladimir Putin.
