An unusual point of tension. The regulation of the text aimed at greening packaging in the European Union, debated on Wednesday November 22 in the European Parliament, constituted a threat to wooden Camembert boxes, for which there is no dedicated recycling channel. Eventually, “Pont-l’Évêque, Mont d’Or and Camembert are saved”according to environmentalist MEP Karima Delli who posted a message on the social network“Europe will not ban[it] not wooden boxes for AOP cheeses [Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée]”.

From parcels to coffee cups, Europeans have never generated so much packaging waste. To combat the accumulation of waste, the European executive wants to reduce its volume by 10% per inhabitant by 2035 and develop the circular economy. Among the restrictive measures, that of making all packaging recyclable in the European Union by 2030. Finally, it spares wooden boxes of Camembert, a flagship product of French gastronomy.
