The European Environment Agency (EEA) judges “difficult” for the Twenty-Seven to respect the environmental ambitions of the European Union by 2030, according to a report published Monday December 18. For example, she believes that it is “very unlikely” that the European Union succeeds in reducing its energy consumption as much as it wishes. To achieve the objective in “By 2030, the average annual rate of reduction observed over the last ten years will have to be three times faster”said the EEA.

In addition, achieving a 42.5% share of renewable energy in overall consumption is judged “unlikely”. According to this document, it is also “very unlikely“that 25% of agricultural land be cultivated according to organic farming criteria. Conversely, it is “undoubtedly probable” that the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% is achieved by 2030, notes the EEA. Good news however, it is “very probable” that the EU manages to reduce the number of premature deaths linked to air pollution by 55%.

This report, which aims to be updated every year, assesses the progress made by member countries on the 28 objectives of the EU Environmental Action Program, which covers the period 2021-2030. “To accelerate progress, member states need to enforce existing laws more, take additional measures and integrate climate and environment into other policy areas”insisted the EEA.
