For the first time, the European Court of Human Rights has condemned a country for its climate inaction: Switzerland. This decision of Tuesday April 9 will set a precedent in the 46 states which recognize it.
This is a historic legal decision for the environment: Tuesday April 9, the European Court of Human Rights recognized Switzerland’s guilt for climate inaction. The country was sued by a collective of 2,500 elderly women, who denounce the disruption of climate change on their health.
A victory for environmental activists
“We, the Elders for the Climate, can be very proud to have brought the climate and fundamental rights to the Court for the first time”, rejoiced Anne Mahrer, co-president of the “Seniors for the Swiss Climate” association. For environmental activists, it is also a victory. Indeed, the decision sets a precedent: it will now serve as a reference for other European states. Switzerland will therefore have to change its national law so that it provides for a plan to combat climate change.
