Hundreds of toxic chemical substances are present on a daily basis, in toothpaste, cosmetics, cleaning products. By 2030, the European Commission wants to ban thousands of toxic products. Among them, the so-called eternal pollutants, present on pan coatings or in food films. The polluting PVCs contained in toys are also targeted. They are suspected of causing cancer.

Flame retardants, present in mattresses and electronic circuits of devices, are considered endocrine disruptors that can damage the neurological and reproductive system. The European Commission wants to ban these substances, including for imported products. “It is really important for the Commission to stay the course (…) to protect people and the environment”says Élise Vitali, policy officer for chemicals at the European Environmental Bureau, who fears pressure from lobbies.
