The crisis in Lampedusa relaunches the debate on the reception of migrants and the question of European solidarity. In a few days, 11,000 people arrived on the small Italian island.
They disembarked on Sunday September 17 in Lampedusa (Italy). Mainly men, from Ivory Coast. Having left Tunisia, they spent three days at sea before arriving, and wish to continue their journey in Europe. According to the Red Cross, the island welcomed 10,000 migrants in one week, the first time since 2011. The President of the European Commission visited the island.
European Commission emergency plan
She presented an emergency plan, with a strengthening of the coast guard, better cooperation with the countries of origin and transit of migrants, and a strengthening of European solidarity. On the French side, where Gérald Darmanin is due to meet his counterpart in Rome (Italy) this Monday, the message is intended to be firmer. “We must protect the external borders of the European Union”, he insisted. On Sunday evening, the Lampedusa detention center, which only has 400 places, still had 1,500 people.
