Sometimes there are 6-0 wins that aren’t enough. The English women can attest to this. Large winners of Scotland on this score in Glasgow, Tuesday December 5, Sarina Wiegman’s players did not manage to regain the lead of their group in the Netherlands qualified in the semi-finals of the League of Nations thanks to a better difference of goals, and therefore still in the running to participate in the 2024 Olympics.

In the event of a victory for England and the Netherlands on Tuesday evening, the Lionesses had to win by scoring three more goals than the Orange, but the Dutch, defeaters of Belgium, scored two goals in added time to win 4-0. At the end of the suspense, they obtain qualification for the last four of the League of Nations, where in February they will try to obtain a ticket for the Olympic Games in Paris against Germany, Spain or France, qualified automatically as host country. To do this, it will be necessary to reach the final, or to place third if France is in the final.

No British team at the Olympics

The hope of a British qualification (selection of English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish players), placed in the hands of the England team, was being played out in Glasgow. The Scots therefore had every interest in losing by at least three goals to hope to participate in the Olympics as part of the Great Britain team, but their 6-0 defeat was not enough.

In Paris, in 2024, the reigning European champions will therefore not be present. Just like their male counterparts since the English Hopes obtained their Olympic qualification by winning the Under-21 Euro last summer, but no agreement was reached with the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish federations.
