During a visit by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Abu Dhabi on Saturday 24 September, the United Arab Emirates and Germany signed an agreement on Sunday providing for the supply in 2022 and 2023 of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel from this Gulf country to Berlin.

The German leader has embarked on a tour of the Gulf in hopes of sealing new energy deals to replace Russian supplies and ease the energy crisis caused by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

During the signing of the agreement, the Emirati Minister of Industry, Sultan al-Jaber, welcomed a “historic new agreement” who “strengthens the growing energy partnership between the United Arab Emirates and Germany”. Olaf Scholz has him “greeted” an agreement on the “energy security”.

The Wam news agency of united arab emirates reports a direct diesel delivery made in September and an agreement to supply up to 250,000 tons per month of diesel for 2023. The Emirates will also supply “a cargo of LNG which will be delivered at the end of 2022 and used for the commissioning of Germany’s floating LNG import terminal in Brunsbuettel”a North Sea port.
