The Imola circuit was to host the sixth round of the Formula 1 season on Sunday May 21, with the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. But bad weather decided otherwise. The organizers announced on Wednesday May 17 that the event was cancelled. “The decision has been taken because it is not possible to ensure the safe reception of fans, teams and our staff.specifies the Formula 1 press release. It would not have been right to impose additional pressure on the authorities and emergency services in the region in these difficult times.”
Quoted in the press release, the Italian Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula One, estimated that “it was a tragedy to see what was happening in Imola and Emilia-Romagna, the city and region where I grew up”.
Flooding caused by heavy rains in Emilia-Romagna, in north-central Italy, has left at least five people dead and thousands evacuated, authorities said on Wednesday, with local elected officials warning residents that they were still in danger. Locally, up to 15 centimeters of rain have been recorded in the past 24 hours and many residents have found themselves trapped, forced to take refuge on the floors or on the roofs of their houses.
