The Franco-German alliance reunited? The meeting, Wednesday October 26 in Paris, between Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz has been “very constructive”, leading to the establishment of working groups in the areas of energy, defense and innovation, said the Elysée. These three themes are sources of tension between Paris and Berlin, the two capitals not having the same ideas on the means of fighting against soaring energy prices, for example.

French President and German Chancellor “discussed the Franco-German relationship in a spirit of very close medium- and long-term work”according to the same source.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz assured his side that France and Germany remain “very close” and “face the challenges together”. “It was a very good and important discussion today – about European energy supply, rising prices and joint armament projects”the chancellor also said in a tweet.

The two leaders also agreed to exchange “before and after” an upcoming visit to China by the German Chancellor and a trip to the United States for the French President.
