The Libyan High Election Commission (HNEC) on Wednesday 22 December proposed to postpone the presidential election initially set for 24 December by one month, shortly after a parliamentary committee concluded that it was“impossibility” to keep it on that date. “After consultation with Parliament, the High Electoral Commission proposes the postponement of the first round of the election until January 24, 2022. Parliament will take responsibility for adopting the necessary measures to remove obstacles to the electoral process “, she announced in a press release.
“The appeals and appeals phase was a dangerous turning point for the electoral process. It was in fact the point at which all efforts to bring this historic deadline to a successful conclusion for considerations beyond the control of those in charge. of the process “, explained the Election Authority. Among these considerations, the HNEC notably cited “inadequate electoral laws concerning the role of justice in electoral appeals and disputes”.
Earlier today, a parliamentary committee responsible for monitoring the presidential election declared “impossible” the holding of this poll on December 24, a major hitch in the transition process supposed to get this North African country out of post-Gaddafi chaos. The conclusions of the commission were made public after an announcement of the postponement of the poll had been awaited for several days, for lack of adequate preparations and against the backdrop of insurmountable disagreements between rival camps.
