The election of Poilievre, one more argument for independence?

The election of Pierre Poilievre as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada is excellent news for the progress of the sovereignty cause in the eyes of the leader of the Parti Québécois, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon.

“I think it will exacerbate certain thoughts about our future,” said the PQ leader Sunday morning, on the sidelines of an announcement on local health care in Abitibi.

“We spend, out of our pockets, through our taxes sent to Ottawa, some billion dollars in gifts and subsidies to the oil industry. And that is with a Trudeau government that boasts of planting trees, then of loving the environment. Imagine under a Poilievre Conservative government. How are these issues, these interests irreconcilable: pipeline projects, tar sands, gifts to multinationals… There are things that confirm the need for Quebec independence. »

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, however, did not want to comment on the Conservative leader’s statement to the effect that the Quebec nation “stands up to wokism”.

On the other hand, he spoke about the tone of the campaign led by Pierre Poilievre. “It’s clearly a different tone from that of the PQ, let’s agree. And that can lead some Quebecers to wonder what connects us to the rest of Canada in this equation. »
