You are in transport or on your sofa, take a few moments to visit the 3D exhibition devoted to one of the finest private collections in the world, the Nahmad collection, exhibited at the Matisse Museum. With 360° navigation you can admire dozens of very rare masterpieces by Henri Matisse. Because of the Covid, the public has deserted museums, but the Matisse museum is counting on this exhibition to make the public want to come back.
“The 3D exhibition does not replace the real exhibition, but rather makes you want”
The project was born at the time of confinement. The museum wanted to keep in touch with its public and is designing this very comprehensive overview of the exhibition “Matisse in the Nahmad collection“. David and Ezra Nahmad, dealer-collectors have agreed to loan sixteen extremely rare works by Henri Matisse. This exceptional set is for the first time revealed to the public in its entiretyand even to you, from your living room or the train that takes you to work.
The idea is not to replace a physical visit but to give an overview, but also to prepare a future visit, or even to extend the visits long after the actual visit. Laurence Schlosser in charge of publishing at the museum explains to us how much this experience is thought to be different and even complementary. For example, it can be an educational tool for school groups. During the 3D exhibition, the labels are visible and come to contextualize the works. Some content is additionally offered thanks to digitallike sound interventions by Matisse himself, from the sound archives of the Alpes Maritimes departments.
A new way to visit the Matisse Museum
Thanks to a highly sophisticated camera, placed at different locations in the rooms, the typologies of the rooms in the museum are rendered identically. Each work has been the subject of a specific recording. The qualities are not those of an art book because what is privileged is the living side. Navigation is indeed particularly instinctive from your computer as from your smartphone. The Matisse heirs who manage the copyrights of the master have validated this project. The museum is waiting for feedback from users, sometimes from all over the world, to improve the process. Ultimate advantage digital exposure will last infinitely longer than the “physical” exhibition scheduled until April 30, 2022.
The historical building of the Matisse museum is integrated into the exhibition in 3D. This 17th century villa was chosen by Matisse and the city of Nice in 1963. Matisse lived in the famous Hôtel Régina and had a passionate relationship with the capital of the Côte d’Azur. A return to the sources for many of these paintings, painted in Nice, or in Vence, visible with the same light that saw them born. Some of these paintings are already famous, like The Piano Lesson from 1923 or Girl in Moorish style, green dress from 1921, others are to be discovered, such as the small interior of Étretat, Seated figure and Greek torso Where Reading from 1947 (see photo above).
