Monday, August 1, the drought continues to hit France hard. If the soil is dry, in some rivers, there is even no water for several kilometers as in the Drôme. The situation could well worsen with the new wave of heat wave which arrives on the Hexagon.
In Loriol-sur-Drome (Drome)the river, which usually passes, let its place to a vague expanse of pebbles. There is no longer a drop of water at this place and this for more than two kilometres. “When there is water, there I have no feet, the water is at this level”describes Jérôme Duval, river monitoring technician, showing a height greater than him. The situation is getting worse since at the end of June, the water did not cover only two meters. Today, the area where the water no longer passes extends over two kilometres.
Gerard Croziermayor ofAlex (Drome) and president of the joint syndicate of the Drôme river, explains that this phenomenon has always existed, but that it has never taken on such proportions. He adds : “Climate change, global warming means that we fear that this is a situation that will continue.” In 2021, the amount of water was much greater than this year and all the everyone noticed the change in scenery. “I’ve been coming to the area for 40 years and this is the first time I’ve seen this”observes a Dutch tourist. Canoe rental companies regret this situation.
