The DPJ will soon be prosecuted for the death of the little girl from Granby

The DPJ will soon be prosecuted for the death of the little girl from Granby in 2019. The lawyer for the child’s mother and grandmother, Mand Valérie Assouline, has announced that she will soon file a civil lawsuit for damages.

The 7-year-old girl was found naked and unconscious on the floor of her bedroom on April 29, 2019. She died shortly after in hospital.

She had been completely wrapped in tape, including her face. The pathologist from the coroner’s office concluded that she died of suffocation.

The child had been reported to the DYP, which had however left her in the care of her father and his spouse.

She was found guilty of unpremeditated murder and forcible confinement. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 13 years. She appealed the verdict and sentence.

The father pleaded guilty and will spend 4 years in prison for having kidnapped the child.

But these convictions do not solve everything.

Since the girl’s death, the DPJ has been singled out since its mandate is to protect vulnerable children.

Within a few weeks, M.and Assouline will file a lawsuit against the DPJ — and therefore against the Quebec government. The amount claimed has not yet been disclosed.

But last week, the same lawyer put the DPJ on notice for the Wendake tragedy: she accuses him, on behalf of the mother of the two dead children, of having failed to protect them. Their father, Michaël Chicoine, was accused of having killed them. Some 2 million dollars are thus claimed from the DPJ and the Ministry of Health and Social Services.

More details will follow.
