In a press release published Thursday, May 5, the order of the Dominicans of Toulouse recognizes for the first time sexual violence against minors within the community, reports France Bleu Occitanie. The Prior Provincial of Toulouse therefore appeals to victims and witnesses.
A religious from this community has already been sentenced for acts in the region, but other Dominican priests in the Province of Toulouse are suspected of sexual assault on minors, the statement said. “We must not limit ourselves to the facts that we know”, justifies the Prior Provincial of Toulouse. This appeal to the victims is addressed to all those who have attended convents of the Province, located throughout the country.
This initiative was welcomed by the association “Parler et Revivre”, which fights for the recognition of victims of sexual abuse in the Church. “I find that it is in the straight line of the duty of truth to shed light on all these facts in order to start again on a sound basis”explains its president Olivier Savignac to France Bleu Occitanie. “It’s not centered on one place or one person, so that means it’s really all sides”he added;
The Commission for Recognition and Reparation, created after the Sauvé report, participated in the drafting of this press release from the Dominicans and is at the disposal of victims and witnesses.
