The discovery of the decorated cave of Villars, in 1953

Decorated by prehistoric artists, the Grotte de Villars, in Périgord Vert, run by Catherine Birckel-Versaveaud, remained untouched until the arrival of speleologists in the 20th century. It’s a big network they discovered. So much so that it took them no less than 5 years to get to the end of it, and to discover, in the end, these testimonies of prehistoric paintings. The bestiary represented is classic, consisting mainly of horses and bison. Add to that ibexes, but also signs, and an astonishing scene which we will have the opportunity to talk to you about again…

The Cave of Villars is open to visitors in July-August from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
