Under fire since the assassination attempt on Donald Trump on July 13, the director of the Secret Service has resigned, several American media outlets, including CNN, NBC and CNBC, reported on Tuesday, July 23. Contacted by AFP, the Secret Service has not yet responded.

Kimberly Cheatle, the head of this elite service responsible for protecting high-ranking American figures, had acknowledged a failure during a hearing in Congress on Monday and was the subject of numerous calls to resign. The Secret Service has “failed” in his mission to protect Republican candidate Donald Trump, Kimberly Cheatle had admitted to Congress. “As a director, I take full responsibility for any security breaches”she said, describing the events as “Secret Service’s biggest operational failure in decades”.

At the start of the hearing, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Republican James Comer, assured that this “drama was avoidable”saying he was convinced that Kimberly Cheatle “had to resign.”
