The diocese of Besançon has just sold one of its buildings to participate in the compensation of victims of sexual abuse committed within the Catholic Church, confirmed Mgr Jean-Luc Bouilleret, Archbishop of Besançon, guest of France Bleu Besançon Friday 24 December.

The building, located in the city center of Besançon, in the Doubs, belonged to the Association des Jacobins, an association of the Catholic Church. The sale of this building brought in 250,000 euros for the diocese, an amount paid to the compensation fund for victims of sexual abuse within the Church (Selam), opened after the publication of the Sauvé report in early October 2021.

For now, the diocese of Besançon is sticking to this check but “if there is a need to do more, we will do more, according to our capacities”, confides Bishop Jean-Luc Bouilleret to France Bleu.

The diocese of Besançon is not the first to put its properties up for sale to supply the compensation fund. The one in Val-de-Marne put the bishop’s house up for sale in early December. The diocese of Toulouse has also announced that it will part with certain buildings to contribute to the fund.

The French Bishops’ Conference (CEF) has set itself the goal of raising 20 million euros from the start of 2022.
