After four and a half months of conflict and more than 30,000 Ukrainian dead, many families are wondering about the fate of their loved ones who have gone to battle. The dead are not always identified. A long investigation work is in progress, in particular thanks to the DNA.
Several men in their thirties have been missing since May 22. These young recruits left to fight the Russian advance on the eastern front of the country. On the other side of Ukraine, their families are desperate and cling to their happy memories. They wait in vain for any news. A woman has no more news of her brother, married and father of a family. The army command does not know what has become of him. A mother says she is going crazy not knowing if her son is alive. All dread learning of the death of their loved ones.
The bodies of mutilated and unrecognizable anonymous soldiers are piling up in morgues across the country. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, at least 9,000 people, soldiers and civilians, have gone missing. So the investigation is extensive. Every day, in a discreet laboratory on the outskirts of kyiv, experts receive hundreds of DNA samples taken by the families concerning the people they are looking for. The lab is overwhelmed by the number of requests. Only 3 to 10% of the results agree.
