The Devils win in overtime

(New York) Jack Hughes scored his second goal of the game at 2:19 of the overtime period after recording two assists, and he was the star of a 5-4 victory for the New Jersey Devils against the New York Islanders on Friday night.


Dougie Hamilton, Tyler Toffoli and Luke Hughes also found the back of the net for the Devils, who ended a two-game losing streak.

Jesper Bratt added three assists, Timo Meier had two and goalie Akira Schmid made 27 saves en route to his first win of the season.

For the Islanders, Brock Nelson and Bo Horvat had two goals each, and Kyle Palmieri had three assists. Goalkeeper Ilya Sorokin completed his evening of work with 33 saves.

In the overtime period, Hughes circled into Islanders territory, moved toward the center and fired a shot that beat Sorokin on the glove side.

Horvat forced overtime by hitting the target with 71 seconds on the clock.

Early in the third period, Hughes gave the Devils a 4-3 lead by scoring his team’s fourth goal on Friday on the power play.
