Jonas Siegenthaler scored the tying goal in the third period, Akira Schmid saved 22 pucks and the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers 3-1 on Monday to even the series at two wins apiece.
“We played a solid game defensively,” Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said. We were good in all three areas. »
Jack Hughes and Ondrej Palat also scored for the Devils, who won their second straight game at Madison Square Garden after two tough home losses to start the series.
“It’s really disappointing, on the contrary dropped Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant. It’s not even close to being good. It was very disappointing to watch. »
Vincent Trocheck scored Rangers’ only goal and Igor Shesterkin made 20 saves. The Rangers have scored just two goals in their last two games, having netted five in each of the first two games of the series.
“We have to pull ourselves together and play hockey like we can,” Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad said. It’s now a best of three games. »
Schmid, who was in goal for the second straight game, was once again incredible for the Devils. The 22-year-old goaltender allowed just two goals on 58 shots received in two games.
“We wanted to win our battles with the stick and block the pucks,” Schmid said. The work on this side has been exceptional in the last two games. It opened my eyes to what I have to work on to be at this level. »
Game 5 of the series will be played at the Prudential Center in New Jersey on Thursday. The sixth duel will be back at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday. If a final game is needed, it will be played in New Jersey on Monday.
