The epicenter of the January 1 earthquake in Japan was in Suzu. Firefighters continue their search under the rubble on Thursday January 4.

In Suzu (Japan), the epicenter of the earthquake, houses collapsed, roads were cracked and boats were gutted. Thursday January 4, four days after the earthquakes, rescuers still found survivors under the rubble. Some residents lost everything. “There was the earthquake, we received the tsunami warning, we fled without taking anything with us”explains Yukio Sunayama, affected resident.

70 people missing in the city

A school was converted into a refuge. It is home to 760 residents who receive one meal per day. “Even counting the food stocks we had in anticipation of disasters, it is not enough”, says Shinshichi Izumiya, manager of an accommodation center. Added to this is the lack of water and electricity, but also fatigue. Thursday evening, hundreds of firefighters remained mobilized in this city where 90% of the houses were uninhabitable. Seventy people are still missing.
