The detainee who escaped Monday from Mauzac prison in the Dordogne, was found and arrested in Nice on Wednesday March 15, learned France Bleu Périgord from a source close to the investigation, confirming information from Nice morning. The Nice prosecutor’s office confirms to France Bleu Azur that the detainee is in police custody in Nice. The detainee was arrested at 6:45 a.m. as part of his search warrant for escape, the Bergerac prosecutor said in a press release.

The 54-year-old prisoner, sentenced for a double murder near Nice, escaped Monday, March 13 at the start of the afternoon while he was taking part in training at the farm-school of the detention center. “This training consists of horticultural work carried out in an area located on the right-of-way of the penitentiary establishment but outside the secure and closed detention area. The prisoners go there and work there supervised by prison guards. ‘penitentiary Administration”had specified the prosecutor of Bergerac in a press release.

An inmate sentenced for murder and theft

Philippe Dubois was to be released from prison in less than three years, “in the month of May 2026”, said Tuesday Sylvie Martins-Guedes, public prosecutor in Bergerac.“The latter is serving several sentences including that pronounced by the Assize Court of Bouches-du-Rhône on March 20, 2008, of 28 years of criminal imprisonment for acts of murder and theft with a weapon”, added the prosecutor. The man was “transferred since September 2022 to the Mauzac detention center”.

The Mauzac prison in the Dordogne is atypical because it is a semi-open prison which accommodates men sentenced to heavy sentences and who are at the end of their detention.

Nice PJ investigators now have a maximum of 48 hours to find out how this man convicted of a double murder escaped, and in particular whether he was able to benefit from complicity.
