Since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, more than five million people have fled Ukraine. Report in the deserted villages of southern Italy, where everything is done to welcome refugees and make them want to stay.
What if the depopulated villages of southern Italy began to live again thanks to Ukrainian refugees? In this house, there are eight refugees from Kharkiv (Ukraine). It’s been a month since these women left their husbands in Ukraine, finding security and a lot of human warmth here to cope with their anxieties.
“For the children, it’s very hard. They ask when we’ll see dad again. My husband has recorded fables that I have them listen to every evening”, says a refugee. The children are already going to the neighboring school. Their mothers are looking for a job. An internet portal has been created to link the skills of Ukrainians and the employment needs of the region. “We are betting on a real integration strategy so that these families can stay here”says Stefano Pisani, the mayor of Agnone (Italy).
