In Hérault, a department often subject to drought, many people equip themselves with water collectors. But this equipment is the target of multiple thefts.
Behind his stalls, Sébastien Valera, market gardener, is still surprised by the scale of the theft. In his field, the water recovery tanks have given way to empty pallets. For him, there is no doubt, it is an organized network. “To steal seven vats in one evening, you don’t come with a car”, he assures. According to him, 52 vats have been stolen in Hérault in recent months. Each tank contained nearly 1,000 liters of water. Reserves which are essential in the event of drought.
An ongoing investigation
This department was one of the most affected by drought in the summer of 2023. To deal with the thefts, operators are organizing. Rounds, installation of cameras are all stratagems put in place to protect the tanks. And despite this, the thefts persist. For its part, the gendarmerie indicates that an investigation is underway to identify the thieves.
