This is the new fashionable dish in Thailand: crocodile meat, sold much cheaper than pork. Indeed, the price of pork has exploded in the country: + 33% in one year. In the hundreds of farms in western Thailand, the demand for crocodile meat has nearly doubled. “On feed them twice a month. Each time in total, it’s 1,500 kg of meat“, declares a breeder.

Once slaughtered, the crocodile is carefully cut up. The skin will be resold for more than 100 euros each, to make bags or belts. Meat will be sold at 4 euros per kilo, while pork costs 7 euros per kilo. The farm also offers its crocodiles by the roadside, for direct sale. In recent months, demand has exploded. “I think crocodile meat is better than pork, and it’s cheaper too.“, explains a customer. A restaurant even specializes in crocodile meat.
