In Chambord, in Loir-et-Cher, a vast deer counting operation took place, in order to determine the consequences of hunting and global warming on the species.

THE deer are the kings of Chambord, in Loir-et-Cher. Increasing in number, they adapt very well to global warming. However, they eat bark and young shoots and damage forests. To better monitor them, large captures are organized in order to learn more about the animal’s behavior. It all starts with the installation of a 500 meter long net, which constitutes a huge trap for deer. The members of this operation are all volunteers. “I have never seen animals so close”assures a high school student.

Preserve the balance of the forest

Once a deer is caught, researchers have little time. In particular, they must take genetic samples and place a GPS collar on the animal. This information makes it possible to improve the management of this species. 400 deer were followed over ten years. Valuable operations to refine hunting plans and preserve the balance of the forest.
