Religion has taken a dominant place in the Brazilian presidential election, which opposes Jair Bolsonaro to Lula. The two candidates are trying to seduce the evangelical electorate.
It’s a presidential campaign that looks like a spiritual campaign in Brazil. About fifty evangelical faithful pray for the victory of Jair Bolsonaro, without ever quoting him. “The principles of the conservative right are the closest to us, the principles that God commands us”explains a woman, Saturday, October 29. “Right now, the evangelical vote can make a difference”says an evangelical pastor.
Today, evangelicals represent a third of the Brazilian electorate. If the majority is pro-Bolsonaro, a more progressive minority supports Lula, as in an inclusive church where some are trying to change mores. “Today, Christianity is associated with fascism. So the cross I wear on my chest and my vote for Lula is to change this vision and show that religion accepts everyone”, says a Brazilian. Jair Bolsonaro and Lula are trying to seduce the coveted evangelical electorate.
