The Deauville Festival kicks off on Friday, with Marilyn Monroe and Leonard Cohen on the menu

Thirteen films in competition, stars and highly anticipated previews including a biopic on the deceased Canadian poet Leonard Cohen: the 48th edition of the Deauville American Film Festival begins Friday for nine days, until Sunday September 11. At the head of the jury: director Arnaud Desplechin.

For the opening night, the organizers are betting on Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver to star in Call Janefilm on abortion by Phyllis Nagy (screenwriter of the film carol released in 2015). Among the expected highlights: the screening on September 9 of Blonde hairthe biopic on Marilyn Monroe played by Cuban actress Ana de Armas, as well as the screening on Saturday September 3 of the documentary dedicated to the Canadian poet and singer Leonard Cohen, Hallelujah, the words of Leonard Cohen.

Faithful to its DNA of discovering young talent, the festival returns with an edition giving pride of place to young filmmakers: eight films out of the thirteen in competition are first opuses.

Among them, several nuggets already spotted in the different sections of the Cannes Film Festival, such as war pony of Gina Gammell and Riley Keough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley or aftersun, by director Charlotte Wells. Also note the presence of The Silent Twins by the Polish Agnieszka Smoczynska. Inspired by real events, the film tells the story of twin girls who refused to communicate with the outside world.

Among the expected events, it will be necessary to count on the film Blonde hair, biopic on the life of Marilyn Monroe based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates. It will be presented on September 9, in the presence of its director, Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, 2007) and its main actress, the Cuban and ex-James Bond Girl, Ana de Armas. The film, which will be released on September 28 on Netflix, is in the running for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, where it will be officially screened on September 8.

On the side of documentaries, a section always very extensive in Deauville, a film holds all the attention: the one dedicated to the Canadian poet Leonard Cohen, who died in 2016 at the age of 82. Entitled Hallelujah, the words of Leonard Cohenhe is signed Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine and returns, through the cult song Hallelujah, on the life of this essential artist. The two directors will be present during the screening on Saturday September 3.

If the dose of glamor of the festival will undoubtedly be provided by Ana de Armas, the arrival of the actor turned director Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, 2010), which will present When You Finish Saving The World, also promises a highlight. Just like the screening, at the end of the festival, of the new feature film by the American actress Olivia Wilde, Don’t Worry Darling with Florence Pugh and pop superstar Harry Styles.
