“Here we have Mystique, a 13-year-old grandma, shows the careful Laetitia Guillaud-Saumur. She was picked up by the pound, so found wandering outside.”
Adopt old pets
At the Dauphiné SPA, at Uriage, old cats are not the most sought after, but some people from Isère are aware of this and want to save them: “They come to really adopt an old cat. Last week, remembers Laetitia Guillaud-Saumur, we had a 21-year-old cat adopted.“The SPA offers lower prices for old animals, recalls Gérard Lassiaz, the president of the Dauphiné refuge:”An adult dog or cat is around 150 euros. We are reducing the adoption rate for older animals, because we know full well that adopters will have veterinary costs more quickly.“
Lots of kittens
Kittens or puppies cost 300 euros. “Knowing that the animals leaving the shelter are all identified, vaccinated. For dogs, females are systematically sterilized. And for cats, males and females are sterilized“, specifies Gérard Lassiaz. “The rates correspond to the veterinary costs incurred on the animals“, he explains. At the moment, there are also a lot of kittens to adopt, because it is the period of births. And in addition, “during the health crisis, the associations that manage the free cats could not sterilize them normally, deplores Gérard Lassiaz, since travel was limited. And so today, there are a few more kittens.“
“We have to limit entries”
Faced with the influx of animals, the refuge being “overloaded, completely filled“, in the words of its president, the SPA has a waiting list to be able to abandon its animal, describes Gérard Lassiaz: “We have health constraints. An animal that arrives cannot go directly with the others. There is a quarantine period. So it’s an area of congestion where we have to limit entries and therefore space them out in time, either with individuals or with pounds.“Last week, twenty cats and kittens were adopted, and eight dogs. There are still sixty cats and as many dogs at the Dauphiné SPA.
