The symbolic bar of 1,000 homicides per year was crossed in 2023, an increase of 5% compared to the previous year. It is the consequence, in particular, of the settling of scores in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) against a backdrop of drug trafficking. The worst figures are overseas, particularly in Guyana, a department affected by violence.
Rape attempts on the rise
In 2023, attempted homicides increased by 13%, while deliberate destruction and damage increased by 3%. This is the largest increase since 2018, and is explained by the urban riots in the summer of 2023, following the death of Nahel, killed by a police officer. The majority of crimes and misdemeanors increased in 2023, in particular assault and battery, up 7%. Rapes and attempted rapes increased by 10%. If victims are free to speak out, it is estimated that only 5% of sexual violence gives rise to a complaint. The number of burglaries continues to increase. They were multiplied almost threefold in 2023.
