The organizers of the Tour of Italy have decided to test the climbers’ bodies from the second stage, Sunday May 5. After 90 kilometers of flat ground to Valdengo, the first reliefs judged “panting” will be on the program: the climb of Nelva then a rapid descent to Biella. Two aperitifs before the final ascent to the Oropa sanctuary, a classic on the Giro, where Marco Pantani won in 1999, the year of his exclusion two days from the finish for an abnormal blood test, and where the riders returned for the last time in 2017 (victory for the Dutchman Tom Dumoulin).
The ghost of the “Pirate” will perhaps grow behind the backs of those who are the first to drop out, while the most valiant will have to thwart various traps: cobblestones, numerous turns and slopes of up to 13%. This will already be the opportunity for the pink jersey, Jhonatan Narvaez (INEOS Grenadier) to defend his leadership tunic, against a certain Tadej Pogacar ( ) in particular, while Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché – Wanty) will fight to keep his jersey as best climber.
