Mathieu Siam, customs officer based in Poitiers, is also an author-illustrator. In 2022, he published two books inspired by a well-known painter, Henri Rousseau, known as the Douanier Rousseau. Even if this employee of the granting of Paris was in fact not customs, it is under this nickname that the municipal civil servant began at 40 years a career of painter.
Through “Going down the river”, an illustrated story inspired by the painter’s pictorial universe, and the graphic novel “Les frontières du Douanier Rousseau”, Mathieu Siam and the comic book author Thibaut Lambert portray this whimsical and outlandish artist. boxes.
The exhibition brings together watercolors, sketches and original drawings from these two children’s books. It is organized around three atmospheres: the painter’s studio, the quays of the Seine which he has surveyed for a long time as a granting agent and finally his famous jungles, emblematic of his universe.
