the cult serial killer saga is cheap and big money

Franchise based on the success of Wes Craven’s film in 1996, the saga in its 6th opus pulls on the rope but it works.

With six films in 27 years, the franchise Scream remains the reference of the slasher, the films of serial killers with knives. Yes, it is a type. Born in 1996 from the imagination of Wes Craven, Scream releases its sixth opus in theaters on March 8. It is directed by repeat offenders Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, who have already signed the two previous films: we are in good hands.

College slashers

Samantha enters college in New York after escaping “Ghostface”, the masked killer inspired by the Shout by Edward Munch. The ghostly assassin draped in black finds her in the big apple, chopping everything in his path.

Scream plays with the codes of slasher by questioning the genre, but also the franchise system on which Hollywood relies a lot today. After the very successful pre-credits, the film investigates the exposition scenes and the serial crimes. Along with other students, Samantha devotes herself to studying slashers in college, like Harry Potter learning magic at Hogwarts school. The genre, subject at the heart of the film, is a constant of Scream, with its references and keys to solving the enigmas of the plots. Which is a big part of its charm for geeks.

Serial

The stroke of genius Scream is to have the killer played by different protagonists who take turns from film to film, and sometimes in the same film. Ghostface can die, there will always be another. He’s an icon, not a character. The serial killer became serial films, then a full-fledged series on MTV. Fed to the second degree, the franchise is also effective in its graphic violence. But it can become repetitive if the staging is not inventive.

Always the same film without being quite so, this sixth Scream has the qualities of the two directors who seem to have had a good time in their own backyard. The franchise maintains its status as a classic of pop culture, horror and gore. We are reassured.
