A month and a half ago, the Rolling Stones began their 60th anniversary tour with a great absentee: drummer Charlie Watts, who died in August 2021. On July 19 and 23, they will stop in Lyon (Rhône) then Paris. A look back at the history of this cult group.

It was in 1961, on a station platform, that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met. From this meeting, the Rolling Stones were born. In their early days, the Stones sang blues rock covers. Then over the decades, they become beasts of the stage, in their electric and monumental shows. On their list, one of the greatest concerts in history, on a beach in Rio (Brazil) in 2006. “A million and a half spectators, divided between the beach and the streets of the city… It’s an incredible memory“, recalls Chuck Leavell, pianist and musical director of the group.

The success is planetary, but the group experiences some hassles on several songs. For example Brown Sugar, a huge hit but a cursed song, sung for the first time at the Altamont festival (California) in 1969, just after a crime that occurred at the foot of the stage in front of the dumbfounded Stones. The group has also established its legend thanks to a cult logo: the famous tongue. 60 years of rock, more than 2000 concerts and yet another world tour… The legend continues.
