“The cuisine of imaginary lands”, Alberto Manguel

The writer and avid reader — his personal library includes nearly 40,000 works — AlbertoManguel says he has a weakness for stories in which the characters take a meal break or get busy in the kitchen. For this culinary encyclopedia, the scholar has designed 73 recipes inspired by the imagination of his favorite novelists, each accompanied by an irresistible sketch sketched by the author. On the menu: Captain Nemo’s Nautilus shrimp (The mysterious islandJules Verne), roast pork à la Circe (OdysseyHomer), the magician’s fingers served at Hogwarts (Harry Potter series, JK Rowling), the dinoburgers from Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton), the fresh blood cocktail enjoyed at Dracula’s castle (Bram Stoker) or even the cake Hobbits Birthday (The Hobbit, JRR Tolkien). More than just a recipe book, Regional cuisine imaginary stirs up the stomach as well as the romantic spirit, in addition to showing the power of the latter in all its manifestations. A reminder, as the author writes, that “literature is not only food for the soul”.
