Veterinarians, in great demand in the countryside, are less than 4,000 practicing in rural areas. In question, more difficult conditions and a less profitable activity than in a city office.

Lise Chenet, 31, knows the roads around Seyne, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, by heart. She is a rural veterinarian and travels 30,000 km a year, going from farm to farm. Today, she takes blood samples from more than 80 dairy cows. Contact with breeders is also essential. His rewarding work is also physical. “It’s not complicated, it’s just that we learn to repeat the gesture”she says.

Lise never thought of becoming a rural veterinarian, but discovered the course at school. “It’s actually complicated because there are constraints, you have to get up at night, you have to go there at the weekend, go out when it’s cold. But (…) I’ve always liked being outside, being in contact with the animals, I love the relationship, the exchanges that we can have with the breeders”, she explains. One of them, Nathanaël Besson, is worried about the disappearance of veterinarians from rural areas. “I can understand that it’s better to always be clean, always warm (…) But for us we need it, it’s mandatory”he confides.
