Elizabeth Debicki is Diana Spencer (Daniel Escale/Netflix)

It is not revealing this last season to say that it is that of the accident and the death of Diana which occurs in the first minute of the first episode. Only the first part of this final season is available and the title of the series could simply become Diana. This time, a unique plot: the last days of Lady Di. The series is transformed into a glossy Gala magazine, led by remarkable actors.

The four episodes focus on the twist of fate and point the finger at the culprits: Dodi Al Fayed’s father, boss of the Harrods and Ritz department stores, who pushes his son into the arms of the divorced Princess of Wales. It is he who provokes destiny by summoning a paparazzi to publish in a major daily 7 pages of photos showing, on a yacht off the coast of France, his son and Diana Spencer together. The series also highlights the ferocity of the paparazzi, especially in Paris and Monaco, compared to lions, while at the same time we see Prince William going on his first hunt in Scotland.

Reason of State stronger than emotion

The series also embroiders, without proven veracity, around the real nature of the relationships between the rich man’s child and the mother of the future king of England. But she does not hesitate to fall into pathos, dwelling on Diana’s last tender kiss to her two children, the last phone call, the last discussion with Prince Charles; moments led by funeral music. She especially regains interest when it comes to explaining the coldness of the Queen of England upon hearing of her death.

Peter Morgan, who created this series, manages to put words into the mouth of his main character that explain how reason of state is stronger than emotion. It is in these moments of reflection on royalty that this 6e season finds its true reason for being.
