For several days, thousands of Tunisians have denounced the migration policy of their president Kaïs Saïed, which they consider racist.

On the placards of thousands of demonstrators gathered in the streets of Tunis (Tunisia) for several days, slogans denounce the immigration policy of their president Kaïs Saïed whom they consider racist. On Saturday March 4, nearly 300 Malians and Ivorians left Tunisia. All are trying to flee the attacks they have suffered for several days in the country. “We are beaten, we are bludgeoned”laments a man.

Galloping inflation and high unemployment

Remarks by the Tunisian president are at the origin of this violence. Last February, Kaïs Saïed affirmed that the presence in Tunisia of “hordes” illegal immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa was a source of “violence and crimes” and came under a “criminal enterprise” aiming to “changing the demographic composition” from the country. Tunisia is experiencing a major political crisis: the president has assumed full powers, dissolved Parliament and dismissed his Prime Minister. Galloping inflation and a high unemployment rate of around 18% are aggravating the crisis in the country.
