“We have seen many cases of public discourse using the threat of so-called Islamization of European societies for purely electoral purposes.” The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (Ecri), an organ of the Council of Europe, is concerned in its annual report published Thursday June 20 about the speeches “hostile” of “political leaders” towards refugees and the increase in anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim acts since October 7.
“The risk is particularly high during election campaigns. Self-regulation by politicians and the media is essential, and they must be held accountable when red lines are crossed”insisted the president of Ecri, the Swiss Bertil Cottier, also professor emeritus of law at the University of Lausanne.
The authors of the report also welcome the “remarkable efforts made” to accommodate the “displaced persons from Ukraine”but regret the “significant differences observed” in the quality of the welcome provided “to refugees and other persons benefiting from international protection”. “Certain states continued to restrict access to asylum for non-European people”underlines the institution, recalling that “all people displaced by war and other emergencies should be offered protection promptly”.
