With inflation, students’ daily expenses increase. On average, this will cost them an additional 428 euros spent in 2022.
Before his fifth year of medicine, a student will live, for the first time, at age 24, in a roommate. “I have organized a small space in the living room because in the bedroom (…) there is someone who will come with a roommate from September. Today, it’s too hard for me to pay a rent at 1,200 euros alone”, explains Antoine Thiry, a medical student. Despite two jobs and internships at the hospital, he took out a loan of 30,000 euros.
Accommodation is the number one expense item for students and represents 50% of their budget. On average, rents increased by 1.37% over one year. On a daily basis, the student notices the rise in prices. “I buy a lot more discount products”, testifies Antoine Thiry. In 2022, students will spend on average 428 euros more than in 2021 due to inflation. “Students are more affected by the rise in the cost of living”explains Imane Ouelhadj, president of the UNEF student union.
