The start of the school year will still be expensive for students in 2024, according to the UNEF union, which published the results of its annual survey on the cost of student life on Wednesday 14 August. Its general secretary Hania Hamidi regrets a “constant increase in the cost of living (…) extremely strong for several years”According to his calculations, this increase will be 2.25% in 2024-2025, or “482.16 euros” over a year. A more moderate increase than the 6.47% increase of the previous year, but which brings the increase to almost 30% since 2017, according to the organization.
The union points out in particular an increase in university registration fees and the CVEC, a compulsory contribution for students since 2018, and regrets a stagnation in the amounts of student grants.
For its part, the Ministry of Higher Education regretted a “communication operation” of the union, criticizing its methodology.
