No Champs-Elysées this year. With one week to go until the 2024 Paris Olympics, a break with tradition is being made to round off the 111th edition of the 2024 Tour de France. A hilly time trial from Monaco to Nice, where the top riders in the general classification will shine one last time, replaces the traditional Parisian parade of the final stage on Sunday, July 21.
What is the profile?
The final finish of the Tour de France will be at Place Masséna in Nice this year. Before that, the riders will set off from Monaco to climb La Turbie (8.1 km at 5.6%), which is classified in the second category and where five points will be awarded for the best climber classification.
A final difficulty, the end of the Col d’Eze which is not listed, will stand before the riders before the long descent towards the Nice coast. The final round trip on the Promenade des Anglais will offer a last view of the sea to the riders, who will complete the 33.7 km effort and their three-week adventure on Place Masséna.
Who are the favorites?
One last victory for the yellow jersey? Tadej Pogacar, winner of five stages since the start in Florence, should be crowned for the third time on the Tour de France, and could complete his coronation with a final success. The world time trial champion, Remco Evenepoel, 3rd in the general classification and winner of the time trial from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin, will be the Slovenian’s main competitor.
Jonas Vingegaard, runner-up to Tadej Pogacar, should not be able to make up his 5’14” deficit on the yellow jersey, barring an incident, but could possibly claim the stage victory. On the French side, Kevin Vauquelin will be the best chance of a result at the front. He finished 6th in the time trial of the 7th stage.
