The film The Power of the Dog by Jane Campion and of which Roger Frappier is one of the producers is also of this 14e edition whose opening night will take place on November 4 with the screening of Spencer by Pablo Larraín.

On the MoMA website, The Contenders is presented as a selection of films that are both influential and innovative, whose impact goes well beyond their theatrical release.

“Whether they are covered in price or whether they are destined to become cult, each of these films can claim to have lasting historical significance and anyone who calls themselves a cinephile will want to see them on the big screen,” it says on the MoMA website.

Dune, which will be released to the general public in theaters on Friday, has garnered high praise since its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in early September.

Presented for the first time at the Festival du nouveau cinema in October 2020, Saint-Narcisse is also a film by Torontonian Bruce LaBruce produced in Quebec by Nicolas Comeau. It tells the story of a narcissistic young man discovering a twin brother. Félix-Antoine Duval, Tania Kontoyanni, Alexandra Petrachuk and Andreas Aspergis are part of the cast.

Several other titles that have recently made headlines are in the selection. Among these, let us note, Titanium by Julia Ducournau (Palme d’Or in Cannes), Annette by Leos Carax, The Card Counter by Paul Schrader, Benedetta by Paul Verhoeven, the documentary The Velvet Underground by Tood Haynes, Little mom by Céline Sciamma, etc. More titles will be announced in the coming weeks.

This 14e The Contenders series is presented from November 4 to January 22, 2022 at MoMA, mainly in theaters and with some online screenings.
