Spain: construction of the Sagrada Familia almost completed
Spain: the construction of the Sagrada Familia soon to be completed – (franceinfo)
In Barcelona (Spain), the construction site of the Cathedral of the Angels, a dream of architect Antoni Gaudí, under construction for 141 years, has reached a new major milestone. Its construction is expected to be completed in 2026.
The unfinished masterpiece is coming to an end. In the skies of Barcelona, Spain, the Sagrada Familia, the cathedral of the angels, was enriched with four new towers, those of the evangelists. They peak at 135 meters in height. Under construction for 141 years, the Sagrada Familia is the work of the man nicknamed “the architect of God”, Antoni Gaudí. A genius or a madman? The question has remained asked since 1882, when the pharaonic construction site began. Gaudí brings out hitherto unknown forms.
The end of a century-old construction site
In Barcelona, the basilica is transformed into a monument, praised in its time by the artist Salvador Dali. After Gaudí’s accidental death in 1926, continuing construction was a risky gamble. A century later, the silhouette of the basilica becomes clearer. Generations of architects have succeeded one another, helped today by computers. The master’s will was respected. The Sagrada Familia should be completed in 2026. But Gaudí used to say: “My client is in no hurry.”
