The Constitutional Council has decided: most of the reform, including the starting age of 64, has been validated by the Elders. Six provisions, as well as the shared initiative referendum, were rejected.
Barricaded since the morning of Friday April 14 under close surveillance, the Constitutional Council has chosen to validate the essentials of the pension reform, including the retirement age at 64. Six provisions were revoked, including the senior index and the senior CDI. On Twitter, Elisabeth Borne expressed herself: “The text is coming to the end of its democratic process. Tonight there is no winner or loser.” Emmanuel Macron now wants to go quickly: the law could be promulgated within 48 hours.
The rejected referendum
The request for a referendum of shared initiative, filed by Nupes, was also rejected. Fabien Roussel (PCF) says he is very disappointed: “If the Constitutional Council only validates the worst of what is in this reform, (…) it is the worst reform.” Jean-Luc Mélenchon judges the Constitutional Council “more attentive to the needs of the presidential monarchy than to those of the sovereign people.” For Jordan Bardella (RN), the decision “confirms the gap between our leaders and the French who remain mostly opposed.” The intersyndicale must meet on April 17, and will be received the next day by Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée.
